I've been trying to solve the same problem. Here's a solution I discovered that worked for the same problem in Vista; it may work also for XP. To install and play Mortal Kombat 4 in Vista: Click setup.exe. Choose installation folder (create it later).

Get error message. Do not click 'Clean up. Multicraft Control Panel Hack there. ' CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and kill setup.exe process. Create installation folder (selected during setup).

Copy all files in DATA folder on CD to installation folder. Rename MK4.exe to Mortal Kombat 4.exe. Install patch (optional). Regards, Feb 01, 2009 .

Like I said earlier we'll literally copy the CD contents to your Hard Drive, and install the game from there: Click My Computer Right click on the CD Rom that has the CD inserted Select Copy Right-click on your Hard drive Select Paste Open the folder that you just created in the above steps, and double click on the setup / installation program directly there.
